If you skip the nitty-gritty, it was a blast, drawing a massive crowd, and kirisutogomen was the Big Winner(TM).
Early Friday afternoon, ilhander emailed me, increasing our official RSVP tally to ten, and mjperson's taunting post proxy-RSVP'ing for Secret Mystery Guest Zeta threatened to push us into our first-ever 2-table game.
We kicked off at a relaxed pace. I acted as the dealer for the practice round. Many participants used it to purge the habit of going all-in on nothing before the main event, which produced some thrilling hands. In the end, the heads-up duel came down to Andrew and Clone #1. This stretched on far longer than expected, but Andrew ultimately prevailed...
By then, it seemed everyone except me knew who Secret Mystery Guest Zeta was, and the consensus appeared to be that he or she (I think it's a he, but, as I've said, I can't be sure) wouldn’t be arriving, so those playing all bought in and we received our seat assignments. firstfrost was again our Desginated Dealer, and if memory serves, our seating order from her left was treptoplax, kirisutogomen, crs, davehenry, ilhander, harrock, Ron, Brian, Andrew, and mjperson.
The theme for the night was "Spades". A lot of spades. It felt like half the community cards were spades. It's unlikely the truth, but it sure seemed like there were more the fair share of spades turning up.
Not that I'm complaining. There was one critical hand for me where I was the small stack and all-in with A-10 (but an Ace of Spades...). Four more Spades came on the board, giving me the nut flush. Quite unexpected, but very happy for me.
For me, it was the Night of the Comeback. There were at least three times when I was short stack and likely to be next out , but managed to triple or quadruple up. I managed to make it to the Final Four, which was further than I'd rated to make it.
The Final Standings
- kirisutogomen - $50
- harrock - $30
- ilhander - $20
- davehenry
- Andrew
- Brian
- Ron
- crs
- Dr. mjperson
- treptoplax
I still don't know who Secret Mystery Guest Zeta is, but I’m told he/she may very well make it next time. Perhaps we'll go multi-table...
